PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS FOR EQUITY AND DIVERSITY

The Educultural Foundation’s Professional Development Workshops for Equity and Diversity were developed to meet the diverse needs of individuals and organizations.

Workshop #1
Cross-Cultural Communication: Embracing Diversity in the Workplace
Many organizations experience conflict in cross-cultural communication. In this workshop you will:

  • Gain awareness of the many cultural reasons for miscommunication and misunderstanding in your workplace;
  • Learn effective skills for communicating across cultures;
  • Learn appropriate, respectful, and relevant ways to interact and communicate with your employees and clients;
  • Learn equitable organizational change processes for addressing diversity in public and private institutions.
Workshop #2
Strategies for Becoming and Sustaining One’s Role as an Anti-Racist Educator
Many teachers want to become anti-racist, critical multicultural educators but are unsure of how to go about becoming such teachers.

They have been raised in communities with little contact with people from different ethnic and class backgrounds. In this workshop, you will:
  • Identify your own assumptions, biases, cultural scripts, and taken-for-granted realities;
  • Learn how to navigate “culture shock”;
  • Develop strategies for identifying and building curricula on the “funds of knowledge” of students from backgrounds different from their own;
  • Develop transformative actions plans for working with like-minded educators to sustain an anti-racist, critical multicultural role in schools and classrooms.
Workshop #3
Addressing the Hegemony of Whiteness in Multicultural Classrooms: A Transformative Framework
Some hegemonic cultural processes embedded in mainstream, U.S. institutions function to reproduce the advantage of students who embrace dominant cultural norms and values. We call these scripts whiteness NOT because they are necessarily embraced by people of European descent but because a disproportionate number of white people have benefited from whiteness, even without their consent.

These processes pose a huge impediment to the practice of critical multicultural education for equity and social justice. In this workshop you will:
  • Learn how to identify the constantly changing ways in which hegemony as whiteness works through ourselves, and through educational and other institutions, including the law;
  • Learn effective critical multicultural teaching strategies that address the challenges posed by whiteness and meet the needs of all students;
  • Develop curricula that foster equity and social justice;
  • Develop transformative actions plans for working with like-minded educators to address hegemony as whiteness in schools and classrooms.

Workshop #4
Strategies for Implementing Critical Multicultural Education in Schools and Classrooms
In the scripted, conservative climate that many teachers find in their schools, implementing a critical multicultural curriculum can be challenging. In this workshop you will:

  • Learn effective critical multicultural teaching strategies that address the challenges posed by the scripted classroom and meet the needs of all students;
  • Learn how to communicate with students and colleagues in diverse settings;
  • Develop greater awareness of how social processes like culture, race, class, and gender impact teaching and learning in schools and classrooms.
